As an AWS educator, one of my ongoing challenges is helping students move beyond surface-level familiarity and achieve true mastery of the concepts tested on the AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (SAA) exam. While broad overviews are important, I’ve found that students often benefit most from focused, deep dives into individual topics—especially those aligned directly with the AWS SAA exam guide.
To address this, I’m piloting a new approach using a suite of PartyRock apps. Each app targets a specific AWS SAA exam skill, providing fill-in-the-blank questions that require active recall and a deeper understanding than standard multiple-choice formats. Here’s how I’m thinking about integrating these tools into my teaching, and why I believe this method holds real promise.
Why Focused, Topic-Driven Practice?
The AWS SAA exam is broad, but real success comes from depth in the core domains: networking, storage, compute, databases, security, reliability, and cost optimization. Students often know “about” a topic, but struggle when asked to apply knowledge in a scenario or recall details without prompts.
By isolating individual topics and skills, students have the autonomy to:
- Pinpoint Weaknesses: Identify exactly where they need more practice.
- Develop Mastery: Focus on one concept at a time, building confidence and competence.
- Align Directly with the Exam Guide: Ensure every practice session is relevant to what students will actually face on the exam.

Why Fill-in-the-Blank?
Most AWS practice resources use multiple-choice or multiple-select formats. While useful, these can sometimes mask gaps in understanding—students can guess or use process of elimination. Fill-in-the-blank questions, on the other hand, require students to recall information from memory and articulate it clearly, which is far more challenging and effective for learning.
Benefits:
- No Guessing: Students must know the answer, not just recognize it.
- Active Recall: This method strengthens memory and deepens understanding.
- Immediate Feedback: Each app provides explanations with links to AWS resources to streamline their learning from the documentation. This helps fill in the gaps and address misunderstandings right away.
How I’m Using PartyRock Apps
I’ve organized the PartyRock apps by AWS SAA exam domain, making it easy for students to select and practice specific skills. Below you can find links to the apps in different categories. Feel free to try it yourself. It’s free and no AWS account is required.

Early Results and Next Steps
I’m encouraging students to use these apps to self-assess and remediate weak areas before moving on to broader practice exams. The instant feedback and explanations help clarify misunderstandings right away, making every attempt a learning opportunity.
If you’re an AWS instructor or student, I’d love your feedback on this approach. Does focusing on one topic at a time, with more challenging question types, help you feel more prepared? Good luck—and enjoy the journey to becoming an AWS Solutions Architect Associate!
